It gives me great pleasure to be able to welcome this fourth edition of the Chilbolton Parish Directory.

The first Directory was issued in 1983, the second in 1988 and the third in 1995. The task of updating it this time has so time-consuming that the Parish Council was tempted to issue it in loose-leaf format, with a view to updating in future only those pages needing modification. In the end, bearing in mind how often the changes are needed, and the additional cost involved, it was decided to continue with the booklet format. We will, however, try to ensure that it is updated regularly in future, and hopefully no less frequently than every two years. It would be appreciated if anyone noticing a need for modification could communicate the details to the Clerk of the Council. Every effort has been made to ensure that this edition is accurate when going to print but the Parish Council cannot be held responsible for any mistakes, or difficulties arising from the use of the Directory.

Once again it has been decided to distribute copies to parishioners free of charge, but to levy a modest fee on those Universities and Reference Libraries who express an interest in it.

Our deepest thanks are due, as always, to Mrs. Eleanor Lockyer for her initial research into the original Directory, to Major W.D.J. Heath-Smith for the last edition and to Mr. Tony Morgan, for co-coordinating the work on this edition.
