Chilbolton Flower Group Report

The November meeting was the Christmas demonstration and proved to be an enjoyable and different display. The Group welcomed Mrs. Marilyn Nourse her first time with the group.

Her first arrangement depicting fire consisted of a large log complimented by orange and yellow.

The next was the impression of a Christmas cake - using a metal container with weaved basket work on top filled with raffia. Large Cinnamon sticks, yellow carnations, deep yellow roses together with hypericum berries and infihled with grapes and oranges made the impression of an unusual cake.

Thirdly - something different Hippaestreum stems, Apple Blossom placed in white oasis, outlined with elaeagnus leaves linked together with decorative wire.

Next a large glass bowl filled with cellophane and glass baubles. Aspidistra leaves, large pussy willow stems in the centre. Large green chrysanthemums infihled with silver baubles, sprayed fatsia leaves, lime halves and a sparkly shower spray finished off with trailing bear grass bearing crystals.

Another change for the fifth arrangement - this time a two tier wickerwork ring interlaced with golden ribbon. At the the base large yellow carnations, green foliage with two small white feathers. A block of oasis higher up was then filled with trailing beech twigs on both sides, fatsia leaves at the base complemented with two white feathers in the middle, small silver green pittisporum and viburnum for the infill. Three large yellow chrysanthemums at the base, black feathers depicting a black swan, trailing down from the top, white Christmas sparkly leaves then white carnations on the bottom of the top arrangement, large white roses to the side and white lilies in both arrangements and a spray of Christmas silvery leaves at the top and one side - all depicting Swan Lake.

The final arrangement - two turtle doves on a large triangular stand, filled in with palm leaves, clematis twigs sprayed silver, together with other assorted silver leaves to add weight. Rolled aspidistra leaves to add weight with large bergenia leaves together with trailing leaves, red euphorbia, golden euonymmus, varigated holly, hypericum berries grouped on one side, small red gerberas threaded through, red roses into the height and through the design, bear grass to soften, icicles dangling at the base. Placed centrally into a ring of Christmas foliage were two roses and two slender red candles. Yes - The Twelve Days of Christmas

Once again a delightful display, much enjoyed by those present. The results
of the competition: “Thanksgiving” -. Mrs. Betty Geary. 2nd Mrs. Annette
Keys. 3rd. Mrs. Jill Maynard. We hope to see more members in 2007.
Come along, relax and enjoy

CHILBOLTON WI REPORT

In December, we held our Christmas Dinner celebration at the "Abbots Mitre", which was attended by 21 members, and very much enjoyed - the "Abbots Mitre" staff did us proud!

We are delighted to have now appointed Liz Blakemore to be our bookkeeper and to look after  our accounts, aided by members of the committee.  We are very grateful to her for offering us her help.

Our January meeting was a talk on "The London Nobody Knows" given by Gerald Gregory, accompanied by slides of various plaques, archways, etc. hidden away in corners of London, and was fascinating.  Our February speaker will be "roving reporter" Alan Jones, father of the young climber, Rhys Jones, who so captivated us with his talk to us last year.  Visitors will be most welcome to join us at this meeting.

Chilbolton Village Hall – One stage further

As you are aware, we are blessed with a wonderful village hall which suits the needs of many users, however it does have limitations when it comes to ‘staging’ any event.

The hall was provided with a sectional stage as part of the build plan, this meets some of the needs but that can be limiting when trying to stage a major event – either because of the time it takes to erect and dismantle, or because many hall users lack the physical strength to undertake this task.

Over the last few years, a group of people have been investigating how this problem might be overcome and how a more permanent stage might be designed - we have had a full feasibility study undertaken by students from King Alfred’s College.

The Chilbolton Players have a major interest in developing this project and indeed, a former member of the group, Tony Battye, left a substantial sum in his will to assist in the provision of a permanent stage.

The Chilbolton Players invite you to a ‘Cheese and Wine Party’ at the Village Hall at 7.30pm on Friday 10th of March where a full presentation will be given about what we have achieved so far.

We do hope that you will be able to join us on that day.
